AI Detection and Academic Integrity: How to Read Reports

Analytical material

What an academic integrity report can tell you

A similarity report, an AI writing indicator and an academic misconduct decision are different things. Reports can prompt a closer review; the institution applies its policy and considers the relevant evidence.

This is a practical explanatory guide, not an original comparative benchmark of detection tools. Product information was checked against the linked Turnitin documentation on 27 September 2026. Features vary across products, languages and institutional licences.

Different checks answer different questions

Check What to examine Limit
Text similarity Matched passages, sources, quotation and attribution A percentage alone does not explain whether a match is legitimate.
AI writing indicator The tool’s estimate for supported text Turnitin treats this separately from similarity and acknowledges possible errors.
Institutional review Assignment policy, submitted work and relevant process evidence A tool does not replace the institution’s review and decision.

Turnitin — Using the AI Writing Report

Confirmed features and predictions

Claims about universal tracking of every keystroke, a complete author profile or inevitable detection should not be treated as facts about all academic integrity products. Such capabilities require evidence for the specific product, configuration and use case.

When comparing systems, check the official documentation for supported languages, file requirements, functions available to your institution and stated limitations. Do not transfer a feature from one product to another.

What to do when a report raises questions

  1. Read the specific report rather than reacting to one number.
  2. Check matched passages against quotations, paraphrases and references.
  3. Review the assignment’s rules on external and AI assistance.
  4. Gather relevant notes, source records and draft versions without altering their history.
  5. Ask the responsible instructor what procedure and evidence apply.
  6. Correct genuine errors through the process permitted by your institution.

Do not introduce deliberate mistakes or distort good writing to make it appear “less perfect”. That does not improve the research.

Questions students should clarify

Does a high score prove misconduct? A report needs interpretation under institutional rules; do not treat a number as a complete explanation.

Does a low score guarantee compliance? No. Authorship, attribution and permitted assistance still matter.

Can editing guarantee approval? No. The university assesses the submission. Editing can help identify weaknesses in evidence, structure and expression.

Before submitting

  • Every reference exists and supports the claim.
  • Quotations and paraphrases are attributed.
  • The method and conclusions match the evidence.
  • Permitted assistance is disclosed as required.
  • You can explain how the work was developed.
